SKIN CONCERN:

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is the presence of excess and uneven melanin in the skin. This occurs when melanocyte cells become damaged due to trauma, sun exposure, inflammation or hormones.

Pigmentation will generally occur on the face, neck and decolletage. Pigmentation manifests in multiple ways which includes sunspots, freckles, birthmarks, melasma, chloasma and seborrheic keratosis.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the pigmentation is darker in appearance to the rest of the skin. This occurs when the melanocytes in the deeper layers of the skin overproduce melanin. The overproduction of melanin results in the darker skin patches appearing over the skin’s surface.

Hypopigmentation occurs when the pigmentation is whiter/paler than the rest of the skin. This may include vitiligo, albinism or may be the result of an injury to the skin.
