SKIN CONCERN:

Scarring

Scars are a natural part of the healing process and are often a result of accidents, diseases, surgeries or skin conditions such as acne.

A scar will result from the biologic process of wound repair in the skin when the dermis is damaged. The body forms new collagen fibres to mend the damage which results in a scar. Most wounds will result in some form of scarring.

TYPES OF SCARRING

There are different kinds of scars. Most scars will be flat and pale. When the body produces excess collagen, scars will become raised, these are known as hypertrophic scars or keloid scars and are more common in younger people or people with darker skin tones.

Sunken or pitted appearance scars often result when underlying structures that support the skin are lost. Surgical and acne scars often have this appearance.

Scars may also appear as stretched skin. This occurs when the skin stretches rapidly i.e. from a growth spurt, pregnancy or when the skin is under tension throughout the healing process.
